New Year Name News

It’s the tenth day of 2020 and there’s already been plenty of baby name news!

Starting us off was the story of the set of twins in Indiana born in different decades. Born 30 minutes apart, Joslyn and Jaxon Tello weren’t expected to arrive until February. But they shocked their parents with an early arrival and an even bigger surprise: Joslyn Grace was born before midnight on New Year’s Eve 2019 and Jaxon DeWayne was born half an hour later, in 2020. While the twins don’t share a birth date (or birth year, or birth decade), they’ve got the matchy twin names down. Their names share the same first and last letter and look similar on paper. They’re similar stylistically, too. The parents went with shorter and less conventional spellings for the more popular Jocelyn and Jackson. Based on the twins’ birthdates, the name Joslyn will be included in the 2019 SSA data, but we won’t find out how Jaxon fared until a year later. It’s unlikely that this news story will have much effect on Jaxon’s popularity (when all spelling variations are factored, it is the most popular male name in the US), but what do we think about Joslyn? Any chance the name will see a bump this year?

And then there was last week’s announcement of the birth of Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden’s daughter: Raddix. In a joint statement on (where else?) Instagram, they announced,“Happy New Year from the Maddens! We are so happy, blessed and grateful to begin this new decade by announcing the birth of our daughter, Raddix Madden.”

Their name announcement has kept name enthusiasts and, well, everyone really, busy trying to figure out what “Raddix” even means. It’s more than the typical celebrity word-turned-name name (North, Psalm, Saint, …); it seems invented. And a bit tongue twistery, too. (Despite knowing the baby’s last name is Madden, we keep calling the baby Raddix Maddix.) Maybe they wanted a long-form name to get them to nickname Rad? We’ll be awaiting an explanation…

But the biggest baby news of 2020 was yesterday’s “announcement” that musician Grimes and billionaire boyfriend Elon Musk are expecting.

Grimes’s Instagram post of her nude belly with the image of a baby superimposed on it got people talking. There was no caption with the image, but she implied that she was pregnant in a comment on the post where she described being “knocked up.” In a followup IG post today, Grimes’s top is opened to reveal a pregnant belly.

While the couple hasn’t verified the news, we’re all assuming (hoping?) that Grimes and Musk will soon be parents together. Musk has 5 boys— Griffin, Xavier, Kai, Saxon, and Damian—with his ex-wife. It’s going to be a looooong pregnancy as we anxiously await this name announcement! Any guesses on what the controversial power couple will name the baby to be? What if they shocked everyone (like they do) and chose a TRADITIONAL name? Could it happen?

That’s it for this week. We’re loving 2020 already!
